A top Iranian military official has claimed that ISIS recruited members from a western region of the country.
“The terrorist organization ISIS attracted members to its ranks from the Iranian towns of Qasr e-Shirin Naft Shahr bordering Iraq,” Iranian Army ground force chief Brigadier General Ahmad Reza Pourdastan said Monday.
Pourdastan alleged that ISIS was attempting to “use some people in the cities along the border” with Iraq, adding that his country’s security forces eliminated a number of militant who “went from Iran to Syria to join ISIS and receive terrorist training.”
He added that ISIS poses a threat to Iran, noting that the jihadist group “has a foothold in Iraq’s Diyala province” bordering his country as well as in Afghanistan.
However, Pordastan did not go into more specific details on the alleged ISIS recruitment in the Kermanshah province, a predominantly Kurdish-populated region.
