Syrian forces have gained control of nearly all of Aleppo, after gaining control of two more rebel-held neighborhoods in the eastern part of the city on Dec. 12. According to several news outlets, forces loyal to the Syrian government now control up to 98% of the city.
Over the last few days, news began emerging that opposition fighters were contemplating a deal to evacuate Aleppo. On the night of Dec. 11, it was reported that the withdrawal from Aleppo had Russian and U.S. backing. According to Reuters, under the terms of the deal opposition forces would be allowed to leave to any area in Syria bearing light arms.
Aleppo has been divided between opposition and government forces since 2012.
