Kurdish Peshmerga forces strongly repelled an Islamic State (IS) offensive on the western Kirkuk frontline, inflicting the jihadists with heavy damages.
Peshmerga commander Kamal Kirkuki confirmed to BasNews that IS insurgents at 01:30 local time Monday conducted an offensive against Peshmerga position near Sakhara village, but they were immediately warded off by the Kurdish forces.
According to the Peshmerga official, scores of jihadists were killed during the confrontations with IS corpses left on the battlefield.
One Peshmerga was slightly injured and he received medical treatment on the frontline with no other serious damages to the Peshmerga forces, said the commander.
IS has recently been experiencing bitter defeats both in the west and north of Iraq. They have recently lost Fallujah in western Baghdad, while Peshmerga forces and Iraqi army is advancing towards Mosul in the north.
The extremist group however struggles to carry out ineffective attacks against Peshmerga apparently to show off its existence.
