The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has revealed that among 500 Kurdish members of the Islamic State (IS), nearly 270 jihadists have so far been killed with over 150 surrendered to the Kurdish Peshmerga forces.
Head of the Communication and Media Department at the Ministry of Endowment and Religious Affairs, Mariwan Naqshbandi, told BasNews that at least 31 Kurdish jihadists have been executed during the last two years by the Islamic State after they were accused of cooperating with the Kurdish security and international coalition forces.
Naqshbandi revealed that about 270 Kurdish jihadists have so far been killed while fighting for IS, and 150 others have surrendered to the Kurdish forces or were captured by the Peshmerga forces.
According to the Kurdish official, most of the Kurdish Jihadists joined IS before the extremist group crossed the borders into Iraq and overrun Mosul in June 2014.
However, there are still about 70 Kurdish jihadists alive in IS but they are not being considered as key figures in the group, Naqshbandi added.
