Iran has foiled several terrorist attacks planned by Islamic State sympathizers across the country, the head of the Iranian National Security Council was quoted as saying by the ISNA news agency Monday.
Police had arrested a terrorist group planning to carry out several suicide attacks in Tehran, Ali Shamkhani told ISNA.
According to the report, all of the men arrested were Islamic State sympathizers.
“One of the largest terrorist operations” in the country had been stopped, the Iranian secret service said in a press statement published by ISNA.
All attacks had been planned by terrorist groups supporting the Islamic State, it added. However, secret service agents had been able to neutralize the “diabolical act” on time, according to the statement.
Neither Shamkhani nor the secret service provided any further details on the exact place and time of the arrests. Information on the arrested was not immediately available.
Shiite Iran is considered one of the arch-enemies of the Sunni Islamic State extremist group.
Iranian troops have been fighting the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria for years.
