Iran’s Navy is working on a series of new military hardware, including a submarine and a destroyer that enjoys state of the art equipment, a top commander said.
In an interview with Tasnim, Navy Lieutenant Commander Admiral Gholam Reza Biqam said the country’s homegrown submarine, dubbed Fateh (Conqueror), has been launched and is undergoing different types of tests before coming on stream.
The 527-ton Fateh is said to be highly mobile with the capability to cruise fast and far in deep waters. It is also capable of firing torpedoes and laying mines.
The indigenous submarine is known as a medium undersurface vessel whose weight at depth increases to 593 tons. It is equipped with advanced sonic radar systems for identifying enemy vessels.
Elsewhere in his comments, Admiral Biqam pointed to the indigenous ‘Sahand’ destroyer, saying that building the vessel is almost 80 percent complete.
The Navy will install the latest equipment on Sahand, he added.
According to the commander, the Navy has also furnished its helicopters with variable-depth sonar systems, making them suitable for detection of submarines.
The Iranian military experts and technicians have in recent years made great headways in manufacturing a broad range of indigenous equipment, making the armed forces self-sufficient in the arms sphere.
Tehran has repeatedly stated that its military might is defensive in nature and poses no threat to other countries.
