A U.S. drone strike has destroyed a radio station in eastern Afghanistan operated by Islamic State militants, media reports said Thursday.
The station was broadcasting from a remote part of Nangarhar province, which has seen a resurgence of Islamic State activity in recent weeks.
Transmission of the militants’ propaganda recently started again after an airstrike in February shut down operations for months. The broadcasts were mainly used as a recruitment tool for fighters.
U.S. forces confirmed that three counterterrorism strikes were conducted in Nangarhar’s mountainous Achin district on Wednesday.
They came the same week as the United States said it would be shifting much of its military focus to the country’s east.
