Daesh terrorist group can be driven out of Libya by military means, the UN Special Representative for Libya Martin Kobler said.
Daesh boasts 6,000 fighters in Libya, according to US intelligence estimates.
“The expansion of Daesh can be stopped militarily. There must be a military action that should be done under the united Libyan leadership,” Kobler said at a press conference.
Following years of instability since the overthrow of its longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, security in Libya descended into chaos amid clashes between rival factions and the emergence of Daesh.
Reports began to emerge in recent months that Italy, France, the United Kingdom and the United States deployed or planned to deploy special forces in the conflict-torn country to assist the local military in combating the terrorist group banned in many countries including Russia.
