Somali Islamist militants battled government forces in the country’s southern Lower Shabelle region in clashes that left at least four people dead.
Al-Shabaab fighters riding pick-up trucks attacked a police station in the town of Warmahan overnight using rocket-propelled grenades, Abdi Ibrahim Shamow, a regional head of law enforcement, said Monday by phone. Three assailants and a member of government forces died as the attack was repelled, he said.
Radio Andalus, a broadcaster that supports the insurgency, said the al-Qaeda-linked militants killed seven government fighters and seized weapons. African Union forces backing Somalia’s army have recaptured swathes of territory from al-Shabaab in the past few years, although the militants still stage frequent attacks including in the capital, Mogadishu.
