The Palestinian gunman who was killed by Israeli fire on Monday after trying to sneak across the Gaza border fence was working for Doctors Without Borders, the Israeli military said on Thursday, according to i24news.tv.
COGAT, the Israeli Defense Ministry body responsible for coordinator of government activities in the territories, is now seeking an explanation as to the gunman’s connection to the international aid organization.
The gunman, identified as Hani al-Majdalawi, had been a nurse at Doctors Without Borders, according to the Israeli military.
Al-Majdalawi threw an explosive device at Israeli troops and opened fire with a rifle, according to COGAT.
“He who takes part in saving lives should assist in humanitarian activities in the Gaza Strip, and should not take part in terrorism,” head of COGAT, Maj. Gen. Kamil Abu Rokon said in a statement.
COGAT also cited his brother as saying that he had acted independently and purchased the gun with his own money.
Doctors Without borders is yet to issue a comment on the matter.
