Emerging reports say Boko Haram insurgents, on Saturday attacked the 5 Brigade of the Nigerian Army stationed in Gubio, about 100 kilometres from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, killing four soldiers in the process.
A report by Premium Times said the insurgents attacked the 5 Brigade camp at about 6:00 p.m. Though the soldiers tried to defending the camp, the attack led to personnel and equipment losses.
According to the report, the terrorists stole four gun trucks, one mortar gun and one artillery gun during the attack.
A tank said to have been stolen during the attack was, however, recovered in a nearby bush.
A senior military officer qouted by the report revealed that the attack had forced military commanders to relocate troops and the 5 Brigade from Gubio to Damasak, where there was a larger camp.
“Therefore, we now have no troops in Gubio, Magumeri and Kareto,” the senior military source said.
The military also said there were fears that the entire stretch between Maiduguri to Damasak, spanning over 160 kilometres, will now be without military presence. This, he said may open the area to attacks.
The attack on the military camp in Gubio is coming few weeks after another attack on a military convoy led to the death of a colonel, a captain and five soldiers.
