Russian Embassy in Baghdad has filed appeals against several death sentences Iraqi judicial authorities have issued for Russian female members of the Islamic State (IS), an official said according to basnews.com.
“We filed several appeals on several verdicts, the timing of their consideration has not yet been set. This issue is not a fast one in Iraq. Currently, the sentences are being delivered,” a spokesperson for the Russian embassy told Sputnik.
The official said over 20 Russian female nationals have so far received death penalties in Iraq over IS membership.
“The verdicts are very different, depending on the degree of guilt of a woman: someone is charged with just an illegal border crossing, others — with participation in a terrorist group. They face up to 20 years in prison,” the embassy official said.
Iraqi Ambassador to Russia Haidar Hadi previously said Russian national sentenced to jail in Iraq may not be transferred back to serve their sentences in their home country because there is no relevant agreement between Moscow and Baghdad.
