About 300 migrants attempted to scale the border wall between Morocco and the Spanish enclave of Ceuta at the Tarajal gate.
The attempt followed the reopening of the crossing on Thursday to street vendors and wares after having been shut down for a week due to repeated migrant assaults on the wall. Tarajal is the only opening along the 8 km border perimeter between Ceuta and Morocco, and is patrolled by agents in riot gear, according to the local prefecture.
About 20 of the migrants, armed with sticks, were stopped and detained by Moroccan police.
Agents dispersed the rest of the group, and sources said the migrants fled to the wooded area of Beliones, near the border.
The alarm due to the assault brought out tens of agents overnight, who remained guarding the border crossing to prevent additional assaults at the wall.
