The Chinese and Tunisian foreign ministers called for new efforts to restore peace in Libya, fearing the Middle Eastern country could become “the next Syria”, like reported by morningstaronline.co.uk.
China’s Wang Yi said Libya was attracting terrorists fleeing from Iraq and Syria, requiring intervention to prevent the country becoming “a new source of international terrorism.”
“We should prevent Libya from becoming the next Syria,” he told reporters in Beijing.
Tunisia’s Khemaies Jhinaoui, whose country borders Libya, said a political rather than military solution is needed based on a 2015 UNbrokered peace deal.
The country has been in a state of chaos and conflict since Muammar Gadaffi was toppled by Nato-backed rebels in 2011, leading to a power vacuum which was filled by many warring militias.
