The International Criminal Court (ICC) announced the trial of Malian insurgent Ahmad Al Faqi Al Mahdi for August 22nd at the headquarters of this court in this Dutch city.
Al Mahdi will be tried for war crimes linked with the destruction, between June 30th and July 11th, 2012, of historical and religious monuments in the northern Malian city of Timbuktu.
According to an ICC statement, the hearings will take place at the 8th Trial Chamber, chaired by Judge Raul C. Pangalangan and assisted by judges Antoine Kesia-Mbe Mindua and Bertram Schmitt.
The statement said that because of Al Mahdi willingness to plead himself guilty, the trial will last about a week and the judges will deliberate and make a decision on the guilt or innocence of the defendant and his sentence.
