The Italian Foreign Minister, Paolo Gentiloni, said that Italy can start helping the Presidential Council (PC) by forming regular forces of Army and Police in Libya, stressing that it is essential to merge the armed groups in an official army, adding that it is a vital task but difficult.
Gentiloni confirmed that Italy doesn’t participate in battle operations in Libya, and its role is only to allow the US forces to use its air bases to implement its air raids on the Islamic State (IS) locations in Sirte.
Gentiloni clarified that the Italian role in Libya is focusing on three points only, the most important is the Libyan national accord under the leadership of Fayez Al-Sarraj, helping the Libyan sides to come to the consensus, and maintaining a common and unified international attitude regarding Libya to reach a peaceful settlement for the current crisis.
He added that the priority for Italy now is achieving stability in Libya to stop the waves of illegal migration to Italian shores and to eliminate the threats of terrorism.
