The European Union’s police force is teaming up with the Greek authorities to search for Islamic State members in the country’s migrant camps, according to a newspaper report on Saturday.
The Europol initiative is to begin at the end of August and involves rigorous checks intended to root out potential terrorists from Syria and Iraq, Kathimerini newspaper reported, citing Greek authorities.
In 2015, Austria arrested two men with suspected links to the Islamic State cell that planned and carried out a deadly night of coordinated attacks in Paris last November. Both suspects allegedly entered Greece using forged Syrian passports before travelling through Europe to get to Austria.
As the main point of entry in Europe’s refugee crisis, Greece has been overwhelmed by 1 million migrants who came to the continent last year.
