Unknown gunmen assasinated Colonel Ahmed Gaith in front of his house in the Libyan capital of Tripoli at dawn Saturday.
A source close to the security directorate in Tripoli told Alarabiya.net that they have alerted Libyan Army officers in Tripoli about the necessity of them protecting themselves as a result of the wave of assassinations targeting army officers in Tripoli.
The source said in a private conversation with Alarabiya.net that eight officers have been assassinated over the past two weeks by unknown gunmen. Three officers remain unaccounted for after their kidnappings during the same period.
The most prominent officer targeted by assassination gang was Colonel Salem Suisi, commander of Battalion 147, charged with the protection of the headquarters of the Ministry of Defense in Tripoli. He was assassinated in front of his house last week.
Unknown gunmen undertook multiple assassination operations targeting army officers in Benghazi throughout 2013, eventually reaching over 200 officers.
It is believed that these same groups are backed by radical movements with control over Tripoli, taking steps after their loss and decline in Benghazi as a result of military strikes.
No organization has claimed responsibility for the attacks.
