The international community “cannot impose” an accord in Libya, that “is in the hands” of Libyans, said Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni speaking before the parliamentary Foreign Policy and Defense Committees.
There is “strong pressure” against the agreement on the new Libyan government, added the minister, who also spoke about “physical and military pressure” towards delegates of the various factions involved in the dialogue.
An intervention in Lybian territorial waters, within the framework of ‘phase 3’ of the EunavforMed fight against human trafficking, “is not possible” without a specific request by the Libyan government, he added.
“We verified that there is no wiggle room at the UN Security Council to authorise such an intervention without assent by the Libyans”.
