Informed Algerian sources have revealed that the International Criminal Police Organisation, Interpol, presented Algeria with a list of 1,500 people believed to be Islamic State (ISIS) fighters of different nationalities.

Interpol warned Algeria of their attempts to enter Algeria with forged passports. The list will allow border control to easily identify them and arrest them.

Algeria’s El-Khabar newspaper quoted a security source saying: “Algeria received detailed information from Interpol regarding the identities of extremists and fighters from 33 countries who are members of ISIS.”

The source added: “The extremists are carrying passports and cancelling them is very difficult, as Interpol was circulating information amongst the offices across the world with great difficulty until they protected their electronic databases last year.”

According to the newspaper report, Algeria was given the names of 1,500 ISIS fighters. Interpol also asked Algeria for permission from the higher authorities to use the Algerian airlines’ database in order to register stolen passports that may be used by terrorist organisations. Algeria also received a database with over 40 million travel documents possessed by Interpol in order to help arrest suspected members of terrorist organisations.

El-Khabar also reported that Algeria’s receipt of this new list of ISIS fighters coincides with its receipt of a smaller list with names of ISIS fighters and extremists after the Interpol General Assembly last year in Monaco. This list was meant to be distributed to all airports, seaports and border control areas in order to arrest anyone who tried to enter the country.

The special unit of the anti-terrorist brigade arrested 6 individuals in Monastir including one subject of three wanted notices for ordinary crimes announced the Interior Ministry in a Statement.

This arrest is part of the efforts aimed to dismantle the terrorist cells and thwart their plans, notably those related to traffic of weapons, the same source underlines.  The investigation revealed that some of these suspects held handguns and unlicensed hunting rifles along with artisanal guns made by one of them who illegally made bullets, the same source indicates.

This operation helped seize 6 handguns, 134 bullets compatible to this kind of weapons, 18 hunting rifles and more than 7,000 cartridges of different sizes, in addition to chemical products, parcels and military jackets, the statement reads.

The defendants were referred to the Tunis first instance court’s prosecutor after the closure of the investigation.

An Algerian press report said that the international police (Interpol) had delivered a list of 1500 ISIS fighters of different nationalities trying to enter Algeria using fake passports.

Algerian newspaper ‘Al-Khabar’ quoted security source as saying that, “Algeria obtains accurate information on the identities of extremists and fighters from 33 countries; all of which are members of ISIS in Syria and Iraq.”

The source added that the extremists have fake passports and the cancellation process is very difficult.

Algeria got a graphic base of more than 40 million travel document owned by the Interpol to help it arrest suspected members of terrorist groups.

Two Egyptian police recruits were killed when unidentified gunmen shot them outside the gate of a security forces camp in the volatile Northern Sinai region, security sources said.

Last month, Egypt extended by three months a state of emergency imposed on Northern Sinai in October after Islamist militants stepped up attacks in the remote but strategic peninsula bordering Israel, Gaza and the Suez Canal.

On Thursday, gunmen in a car shot dead the two policemen who were guarding the gate of a police camp in the city of Rafah, the sources said.

Security forces responded with gunfire but the attackers fled the scene, they added.

Insurgents have killed hundreds of soldiers and policemen in Sinai since mid-2013, lashing out after then-army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi ousted Islamist President Mohamed Mursi following protests. Sisi went on to be elected president last year.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for Thursday’s attack.

Fighting, mainly sniper fire and wildly targeted mortar shelling in Leithi, Sabri and Garyounis, continue despite advances by the Libyan National Army. On the past three days, according to Jalaa Hospital, it has received 22 injured and one dead, all Libya army fighters. Most, include the dead man, were involved in the Leithi fighting. Other were wounded in Sabri and Garyounis.

There are claims too that the LNA has finally taken the small south Benghazi harbour at Mresa, used to supply the Benghazi Revolutionaries Shoura Council forces with arms and fresh fighters, and ship out the wounded to Misrata. A source in 309 Brigade told the Libya Herald that when the area fell, an Islamist tired to escape Mreisa with his family. Finding his way blocked, he then surrendered himself, waving a white flag, and asking that no harm should come to his family.

According to the army source, the man was a Libyan.

Otherwise the city, like Tripoli, has been quiet in the past two days, apart from random rockets continuing to fall in certain areas.

However, three people are reported wounded as a result. One has been named as Ayyoub Wanis Hamad, 23, who was hit in Buhdeim area by shrapnel in his left leg. The others are Hamza Ali Faituri, aged 13, hit by shrapnel in his right hand in Hadaiq area, and Muhamed Ali Al-Jazhawi, also 13, who suffered a bullet in the head.

The growing influence of radical Islamists in Tripoli since Libya Dawn forces took control of the city has become clearer with changes to curricula in schools.

While Islamic studies have always been a standard part of the curriculum in Libyan schools, social media has been abuzz in the past week over the shift towards teaching more radical views of Islamic beliefs in secondary school religious classes. A worksheet circulating on the internet suggests that students are to be taught the value of jihad as well as about the importance of punishing those who choose not to follow Islam.

The Libya Herald showed a copy of the worksheet to a Tripoli resident who wished not to be named. He immediately expressed shock over the content and lamented that Libyan students are being “indoctrinated” with this kind of “propaganda”.

Last week it was reported that schools had been ordered to drop French and citizenship classes in Tripoli.  While the reason given – not enough qualified teachers to teach the subjects – rings true for French courses, it does not carry the same validity for citizenship classes.  Although there is no concrete evidence that the suspension of these two subjects indicates a growing Islamist presence, languages other than Arabic were some of the first classes ordered suspended after the Islamic State gained a foothold in Derna.

Meanwhile, there are rumours that University of Tripoli will be ordered to segregate in the autumn, forcing men and women to attend classes separately. A professor, who also wished not to be named, confirmed to the Libya Herald that she had been told this but did not think that it could be enforced.

Within the past couple of months Libya Dawn has also forced the segregation of Fursia park in Busetta, the large track and park facility on Al-Shat Road that is extremely popular with families. As of this writing, the park is open to women only for two days a week and to men only on the other days, preventing entire families from being able to enjoy the park together.
