A fatal explosion in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula has claimed the lives of three soldiers, media reported on Monday.
“Three soldiers were killed and a fourth was injured in the bombing,” a local security source was quoted as saying by Anadolu news agency.
An explosive device was detonated in central Sinai when a military water tanker was passing, the source added. No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, the media outlet added.
On Sunday, mortar fire in the northern Sinai city of Sheikh Zuweid killed two Egyptian civilians.
Egypt has been in a state of political turmoil since the ousting of long-standing Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak in 2011. In 2014, an indigenous militant group in Egypt’s Sinai pledged allegiance to Islamic State, a terrorist group outlawed in many countries, including Russia and the United States.
The self-proclaimed Wilayat Sinai has subsequently claimed responsibility for a number of deadly attacks against Egyptian security forces in North Sinai.
