The Secretary General of the Kurdistan Socialist Democratic Party Muhammad Haji Mahmoud insists that Kurdish Peshmerga forces must be unified and organized as a governmental establishment under the direct control of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Peshmerga Ministry.
On Monday, a ceremony to mark the 40th day since the death of Ata Muhammad, the Kurdish Peshmerga soldier and son of the Socialist Party leader, was held in Sulaymaniyah.
“Defending our homeland is the duty of all of us [Kurds], and we must do our best to prevent terrorists [Islamic State militants] from threatening the security and stability of the Kurdistan Region,” said Mahmoud.
He continued, “Now the Peshmerga is the national force of Kurdistan, and it is better to organize the force as a governmental establishment [they must no longer remain loyal to a specific Kurdish political party] in order to become the force of all parties and people.”
Furthermore,Mahmoud stated that it is necessary to have organized forces to protect the Kurdistan Region because he believes that the war against Islamic State militants will continue and another terrorist group may emerge after the destruction of Islamic State.
On 26 of November 2014,Mahmoud’s son was killed in fighting Islamic State insurgents in the village of Talward in the Kirkuk Province of northern Iraq.
