Shilan Hamid has returned to Kurdistan to defend her homeland against IS ‘animals’
A 26-year old Dutch Kurdish hairdresser, Shilan Hamid from the city of Almere, has joined the Peshmerga in the fight against terrorism.
She has swapped her high heals and skirts for a military uniform to fight the Islamic State, reports the Dutch magazine Marie Claire.
The Kurdish female fighter has found fame in the Netherlands, after a TV interview.
She said she joined the Peshmerga forces after she heard TV reports about human rights violations committed against Kurdish Yezidi women, who have been enslaved and raped by IS fighters.
“I had never carried any weapon in my life. My youth in the Netherlands was without worries. I am thankful for this. But I have dreamt for a longer time about Kurdistan,” she told Marie Claire.
On the internet she looked to pictures of female fighters. “They love their country so much, that they want to fight for it. I also want to contribute,” she said.
“I wouldn’t join the army for a piece of land, or a dispute between two leaders. But the battle against IS is no normal war. It would break my heart if I killed somebody whom I could like. But the members of IS are animals, I have no pity for them.”
The 26-year old spoke on the Dutch TV-show Jinek via Skype on 14th January, and has received much support from fellow Dutch Kurdish females who would like to support the Peshmerga forces in Kurdistan.
